One of the factors driving the growth of the modular flooring market is the increase in office market space. In Poland alone, office space is approximately 12.1 million m2, which many statistics indicate will grow by approximately 10-15% in the coming years. The global modular flooring market is estimated at USD 54.6 trillion in 2021 and is expected to reach USD 72.5 trillion by 2026.

What is the situation with regard to our company?

We as a carpet distribution and installation company, and as the owner of the Workstep carpet brand, have seen a growing trend in carpet tile sales for many years. Over the course of several years, the ratio in stocking and sales of rolled and tiled carpets has changed dramatically. Taking the example of our leading collection Workstep Regular540 (formerly Workstep Mobilo), it can be seen that in 2010, we were stocking only rolls; at the end of 2014, the carpet tile collection was added - at that time, the ratio of square metres of carpet in a roll to carpet in tiles was 90/10; in 2021, the ratio was already only 10/90.

Why the growing trend for carpet tiles?

Carpet tiles are gaining popularity in commercial environments such as offices, offices, restaurants, retail shops, hotels and guesthouses, as well as in the residential segment (increasingly customers are choosing carpet tiles for bedrooms and children's rooms). They allow faster installation along with reduced waste. The acoustic properties allow carpet tiles to be used in areas where acoustic insulation is needed. This flooring material is gaining popularity due to its cost-effectiveness, durability and aesthetic design range, thanks to the integration of new technologies.

What are the advantages of carpet tiles?

This type of floor covering is gaining recognition primarily due to its modularity and simplicity. What does this mean? Let me bullet-point the main advantages of carpet tiles:

  •     Easy installation - they are installed with a non-slip liquid, the so-called "Velcro" adhesive.
  •     Better soundproofing of interiors - carpet tiles are made with a bituminous or other backing, they have a thicker backing compared to roll carpets.
  •     Transport - they can even be transported in the boot of a passenger car.
  •     Storage - they can be stacked on top of each other and you only need a small space to store them. The tiles are usually 50 cm x 50 cm in size.
  •     Installation waste - when cutting carpet on a roll, the installation waste is on average 10-15% higher than that of tiles.
  •     Repair of damaged elements - in case of a stain that is difficult to clean or any other "accident", it is possible to remove a tile and install another one in its place, without the need to tear the carpet from the whole room.
  •     Possible to create patterns - the tiles can be used to separate different 'sectors' and modern patterns and arrangements can be created.
  •     Access to technical utilities - with raised floors, cabling is often routed under the floor. In the event of malfunctions, it is easier to access potential faults to rectify them on the fly, without having to carry out a general overhaul of the floor each time.
  •     Quality and durability - customers choose tiles because of the fact that it is a durable product. In many cases, the tiles have a much better performance than a carpet in a roll that is permanently fixed to the floor. In addition, they note that the fibre "sticks" better to the tiles in which it is embedded than to jute, and the pile does not wear out as much and is resistant to greater traffic.

In summary, carpet tiles are 100% in line with market demands - they are easy to install, logistics and storage are not a problem, and they are environmentally friendly - less installation waste, recyclability, mobility of the tiles.

Today, based on market needs, as well as production, storage and disposal costs, Workstep's floor covering range focuses primarily on carpet tiles.
